Music and literature were the themes we wished to work with in our final thesis. The site behind the highway, next to the "stadshus", is just perfect, because of it's location in the city center. Within it´s position behind the highway, we see the freedom of architectural choice, it gives us.

Literature transports written information and music mediates emotions. Both are a strong elements in human culture.

Both literature and music are used for the generation of our mind. By talking about the relaxing use of the latter we find interest in the antagonism of the body and the soul and their relaxing counterparts.

Manuel Castell, "The rise of the network society"

A quotation of Manuel Castell's book starts a discussion about societies' previous changes. The pressure modern society puts on us, the need of money, career and acknowledgement within society drives people into isolation. Social contacts freeze. Bodily and mental counterparts of daily life are missing,

To compensate these negative developments within the network society, we want to create architecture for the space of place within the space of flow of our society.

The sites main characteristics are it's infrastructure and boarders, the noise level and qualities resulting of the closeness of the city and the water.

The main entrance will be under and to the east of the railway and highway bridge. Further entrances and conjunctions are at the bridge to Kungsholmen, to the west of the bridge and in front of the Sheraton Hotel. The latter fits perfect to provide the necessary parking places. We also add a hotel there in connection to the parking house.

To find a proper approach to complexity of the site we decide to work with different layers.

access (entrance, parking, nodes and conjunctions)
space of flow within the building (vertical and horizontally)
transparent, closeness, mass, voids
space of place (functional spaces) facade
noise
The interaction between architecture and urban planing is obvious. Present infrastructure elements are to exert influence on the architectural design. On the other side our architecture will be of strong importance for the urban situation. Architecture influences urban planing urban planing influences architecture.

The character of our site is subject to the dominant highway. Left over areas are the determinant element.

The design is structured through infrastructure and horizontal relations. To work with sections gives the possibility to work with this long area who's main properties are the flow in direction of east to west and it's limiting character in north south direction.

We see the conflict of this boardwalk and the high mobility on our site as an hidden quality, which we try to work on with different urban elements. We see these existing urban boarders as spaces for communication and not as divisions.

We implant elements like water, nature and the boardwalk, which are typical for Stockholm. By working with them we express them different, more artificial. We also develop a functional program for the site a place for the recreation of body and soul.

Our architectural design interrelates with the urban landscape and is not to be seen as free standing form. The relationship between the city and architecture, architecture and the city is an important design idea.

Because of the linearity of our site we create a "space of flow" along the waterfront. Around these flows we wrap bands to create spatial qualities like boarders, opening and connections. The flows and their connecting elements

depend on the existing infrastructures. Through sections along the "flow" we zone the site and control the wrapping of the bands.

The place of certain, space depending functions, like the concert hall are placed by dependence on the existing urban connections. These "place" functions and the flows are attributes in need of certain spaces which thereafter are created by the bands. By the developing of the latter, their transparency, closeness and materiality, the form of the building evolves.

We take up thematically the multifunctional roman thermal spa and put it into present context. The coalition of different

functions like music, literature, a bath and fitness within a building draws each of them out of their "modern" definition. They are reconnected after historical examples like the roman thermal spa.

The combination of the different themes in our design conclude the for us significant parts for recreation. It is important that we integrate bodily and mental relaxation. We take the core of the chosen functions connect them again to evolve the place for the recreation of the body and the soul.
